Acoustic Blues Weekend
Friday 3rd to Sunday 5th March 2017
The Beacon, Wantage, Oxfordshire OX12 9BX

The weekend featured instructional workshops for all levels on blues harmonica with Will Wilde. Adam Franklin conducted the bottleneck slide guitar class. Michael Roach and Abi Budgen taught a country blues guitar class. Below are the full details:

The weekend will offer classes starting Friday from 1pm to 5pm and an evening jam session from 8pm to midnight for ‘participants only’. On Saturday, classes will run from 10am to 5pm followed by a public staff concert at 8pm. On Sunday, classes will start at 10am and end at 3pm.  The classes will cater for all levels of ability and we highly recommend that you bring along a portable recorder so you can recall your lessons for future reference. The tutors for the ‘Acoustic Blues Weekend’ are Will Wilde (harmonica), Adam Franklin (bottleneck slide guitar), Abie Budgen and Michael Roach (country blues guitar).

The weekend fee is £170.  A single day rate is £55 for Friday. Saturday is £85 and includes the evening concert. The rate for Sunday is £55.

Email or call us to reserve your place. Make your cheques payable to Euroblues Promotions Limited. We accept PayPal and our email address is: info@euroblues.co.uk. If you would like to do an online transfer, email us and we will reply with our details. Also, you can ‘turn up’ and pay on the day.

Regarding accommodation, we are staying at The Bear Hotel (Wantage). It is a two-minute walk from The Beacon. We negotiated a special room rate of £50 per night (includes breakfast). Their telephone number is 01235 766 366. Alfred’s Lodge (01235 762 409) is another local B&B we recommend and The Bell Inn (01235 763 718) is a pub with 12 rooms just across the street from The Bear Hotel.

Artist Details and Program Information:

Will Wilde picked up his first harmonica at the age of 16 and played it until his lips bled. Weaned on the likes of Muddy Waters, Sonny Boy Williamson and Buddy Guy, Wilde grew up steeped in traditional Chicago Blues, yet his focus as an artist remains resolutely on the future.
With knowledge and respect for the original masters of the instrument, Wilde takes the harmonica to a whole new level. His live show has been described as: ‘A masterclass of blues harp playing, bar none.’ (Blues in The North West).

For the weekend, Will will be catering to all levels of harmonica playing. He will help students to improve on key skills such as tone, vibrato and bending. Students will learn how to improvise and build your own solos using various scales and positions. He will focus on how to accompany a vocalist in the traditional Muddy Waters sideman role using study pieces from Muddy's "King Bee" and "Hard Again" albums.

Adam Franklin is a superb exponent of blues and ragtime.  With a voice that is both powerful and soulful, his performances are intense, energetic and highly entertaining.  A lifetime of intensive listening and 3 decades of playing underlie his easy rhythmic excellence.

For the weekend, Adam will look at all aspects of slide guitar, from the basic techniques and tunings to classic rhythms and licks of the innovators. By studying the styles of; Tampa Red, Robert Johnson, Blind Boy Fuller, Son House, Barbecue Bob, Willie Johnson, Charley Patton and more, students will be shown how to incorporate these techniques and licks into other songs. Students will also look at how to play rhythm and melody/lead at the same time. One or two sessions will be put aside to look at open tunings. Songs such as; Memphis Minnie’s ‘When The Levee Breaks’, Robert Johnson’s ‘Hellhound On My Trail’, Furry Lewis’ ‘Turn Your Money Green’, Mississippi John Hurt’s ‘Frankie’, while not featuring a slide, use the same tunings and have great rhythmic licks that can be used in many other contexts. Also, anyone interested in blues mandolin should bring one along. I will have mine on hand to teach the classic styles of; Charley McCoy, Yank Rachell, Vol Stevens and Johnny Young.

Michael Roach from Washington, D.C., is the founder and Director of the annual Blues Week and Acoustic Blues Weekend programmes. After spending several years learning directly from such well-known figures as John Jackson, John Cephas and Jerry Ricks, Michael has developed his own style and is now an exceptional performer. With six CD albums to his credit and one instructional DVD (An Introduction to Country Blues Guitar), he is firmly established in traditional blues music circles. For the weekend, Michael will focus on the skills and techniques used by early guitarists associated with the state of Texas. He will use blues songs by Blind Lemon Jefferson, Mance Lipscomb, Lightnin Hopkins, Ledbelly and Lil Son Jackson among others to show you how to play a 12 bar, an 8 bar and a ragtime blues progression. He will start by showing you the basic framework of a song and then dress it up with tricks and hot licks.

Michael will be assisted by guitarist Abie Budgen. Abie has devoted many hours listening to and working out how to play from old recordings in an effort to capture and communicate the spirit of the original sound. She has been teaching blues guitar to all levels of ability for 11 years.

The weekend fee is £170  A single day rate is £55 for Friday. Saturday is £85 and includes the evening concert. The rate for Sunday is £55.  Advance booking is required. Email or call us to reserve your place. Make your cheques payable to Euroblues Promotions Limited. We accept PayPal and you can also ‘turn up’ and pay on the day.
